Fibre supplements for diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is a functional bowel disorder that manifests itself as:

  • an increase in the frequency of evacuations, usually more than 3 times/day
  • liquid or semi-liquid stools
  • flatulence
  • abdominal pain

In the presence of diarrhoea, it is essential to identify the underlying cause of the problem and to recommend a treatment which both reduces symptoms and restores the intestinal balance.

Diarrhoea is accompanied by excessive fluid loss and by changes in intestinal bacterial flora. It is therefore important to manage any electrolyte imbalance, preventing dehydration, and to regulate bowel functions, restoring the probiotic bacterial flora and microbial balance.

A diet rich in fibre and the intake of adequate amounts of water help to restore bowel regularity and probiotic bacterial flora. The ideal diet to keep the intestinal bacterial flora in optimal conditions and to fight diarrhoea is a varied diet, particularly rich in fibres and prebiotic substances.

Soluble fibres, in addition to regularising intestinal transit, favour the development of bacteria with prebiotic activity at the expense of pathogenic bacteria, maintaining the microbial flora balance. The soluble fibre is in fact fermented by the intestinal micro-flora, promoting the growth of prebiotic bacteria, in particular Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Furthermore, this type of fibre favours the absorption of minerals such as calcium, iron and magnesium.

In case of difficulty in introducing the right amount of fibre into the diet and in the absence of specific contraindications, it is possible to use fibre food supplements. THD offers two supplements based on natural and prebiotic fibres: THD Fibraid® and THD Fibraid® Gel. For further information on the THD Fibraid® line, click here.
